A weekend of celebration is planned to honour two distinguished Bradford on Avon engineers on their landmark birthdays.
Dr Alex Moulton, inventor of the Moulton bicycle and designer of the suspension for the original Mini, will be 90 on April 9, while on April 15 Jem Marsh, co-founder of sports car manufacturer Marcos, will turn 80.
Bradford on Avon Town Council, the preservation trust and the town’s museum have joined forces to put on an exhibition celebrating Dr Moulton’s engineering career at the West Barn from April 25-28.
Dr Moulton said: “I am deeply honoured and delighted. I feel very privileged that they have taken the trouble to do this.

Appropriately there was a connection between Dr Alex Moulton and Jem Marsh in the 1960s Mini Marcos sportscar, which even competed in the Le Mans 24hour motor-race. Does anyone remember these cars?
Have seen these super mini-based sportscars when I was involved in the mini scene, Very popular with the Dutch and German enthusiasts I seem to remember ?
I worked with a very nice guy during the nineties, Allan Brown, who was mad about old Minis. He is a clever engineer and restored a Mini Marcos from a bare shell, doing all the mechanicals and painting and everything. It was fantastic when it was finished and travelling as a passenger, pretty heart-stopping. Allan’s brother Mike was also involved with racing Marcos’s. Later, I found out that Allan had got into racing them and had bought another yellow Marcos and done very well competing in it. Photos here:

Note that he had to make a bulge in the roof to fit his helmet in; he’s well over 6ft. I’m sure that he will be at Bradford on the Jem Marsh day.
