Hello. I am in the process of restoring a 1974 Deluxe. This is to be used on a long distance charity ride next year.Over the last two years I have completed charity Coast to Coast rides- (Whitehaven to Tynemouth). In 2018 I did this 130 miles over 3 days on a Raleigh Chopper ( a late model special edition loaned by Raleigh ). This was for the RAF Benevolent Fund ( I am ex RAF ).I raised £3665, and this story is on Facebook page – Coast to Coast on a Raleigh Chopper.

In May this year 3 of us on Choppers rode this journey in 15hrs 48mins for Children with Cancer UK, and Macmillan Cancer. We raised approaching £2000. This features on Facebook page – Coast to Coast on a Raleigh Chopper in a day.

Next year I have decided on a change of bike, and intend to use my restored Moulton Deluxe. I had a Moulton Midi in the early 80, s as a teen, and remember it could give my mates 10 speed racers a run for their money! To keep peoples interest, I have decided to use the Moulton, and I will also feature the rebuild/ restoration on my new Facebook page when I set it up.

My chosen charity next year will be the RNLI, and I intend to ride the Moulton about 400 miles over 3 days, sometime in April.

There will be a purpose to the challenge, and this will be explained on the Facebook page when it is created in September.

Apologies for the long winded introduction, but I felt it was important to explain what I am going to do. I am 6ft 4 and 50 years old, so no spring chicken anymore.

The Deluxe 4 speed rear wheel requires a rebuild, and there were issues regards gear selections and wear. Also the trigger shifter was past it, and was missing a small metal lug/stop.This has rendered it scrap.

I am going to convert to 3 speed, and I am looking to buy a useable 3 speed rear wheel. I am not bothered about cosmetics, but require it to be true, no broken or loose spokes etc, and a working 3 speed.

I also am looking to buy a useable 3 speed trigger shifter. I will be replacing all cables, so not essential to have a gear cable. If one is fitted, then this is a bonus.

Most other items I am in the process of cleaning or reusing.

One last thing would be the quick release seat post clamp, if one is available.

What advice would people give regards long distance cycling on an F frame. I managed the Coast to Coast on the Chopper in 15hrs 48 mins, and I am fairly fit for 50. Is 150 + miles a day for 2 or 3 days doable on one. I will be staying at b and b, s so will not be carrying a lot.

If this lengthy post is not acceptable on your forum, please let me know and I will refrain from doing this again.

I am fairly late rediscovering Moultons, and do not know why I waited so long. I last owned one ( Moulton Midi ) in 1983, when I was 14 !

    Any advice, help much appreciated.

    Regards

you might want to look for an alloy wheel-wheels, a lot better at stopping in the wet, be careful with the rim thickness though they tend to wear out quick
