I am a new owner of a 1965 deluxe which is in fairly good condition considering. One problem I have is the selector is not staying in the gear I select It appears that the spring is not holding selector in the correct tooth of the ratchet. Is there a way I can bend the clip to hold the gear in position better. I am referring to the gear lever on the handlebars. I hope that I am explaining myself.

look on ebay i think you can use a modern 5 speed trigger lever with the old 4 speed , alternatively look for an old 4 speed changer.the setting up of the cable is also tricky, if i remember right when in second gear the rod in the spindle should just be in line with the end of the hollow spindle on the left side.if this is not adjusted right it will jump out of gear anyway.you also want a nice lubricated cable as the first gear selection has a very strong spring

one other thing, i recall a four speed i had there was little difference between 1st and 2nd, so you could just use a 3 speed trigger (readily available and cheap) and just use gears 2,3 and 4

Which gear is it slipping out of?
Is it slipping out of all 4 gears?
Normally it’s first gear which may be difficult to hold.
Initially I had some difficulty getting and holding 1st gear on my 4 speed Moultons but all that was required was adjustment.
The adjustment is as stated by David James above.
Also to engage first you should pedal as you engage the trigger, whereas with 2, 3 and 4 you should slacken off or even stop pedalling.
That’s what I’ve read and it works for me.

If it is the trigger they do occasionally come up on Ebay.
Recently I bought a spare in excellent condition for £20 which might have been over the odds.
I’ve seen them go for less and more.

You stated the spring was not holding ‘the ratchets in place’.
Same problem on my M deluxe was solved by increasing the tension of the spring. Could not bend it so I cut the alloy ferrule from a pop rivet – flattened it slightly pushed it over the end of the spring to increase the tension. Still working and no cost. Greased everything in the trigger.
