Hi Ken! I too have been bothered by these scammers who read the Club Wanted List (when it is opened for all after one month) and then come with fake offers. I was offered a seat-post toggle+bolt for ‘just’ 170 quid!!! It would be best if this list is only available to Club Members and NOT opened for all after one month of posting, that’s when these fake offers come!! In any case the Club lists should be to the advantage of members only. Others that are Moulton interested can easily join-up, it only costs peanuts! Best regards, William in Norway. PS. See message #29477 on the Yahoo Moulton Group List.

He picked the wrong guy if he thought he was going to fool you Ken. As of yesterday, I have restricted classified ads to logged in users. They might not necessarily be current members but at least there’s a certain amount of traceability and they can be kicked out if they’re up to no good. Let me know if you notice any problems.

I too heard from David “no crash” Blau, as well as one other person/persona, both within the last week. Neither contacted me again after I reiterated what I’d already asked in my ad. Both emails were from Yahoo! Mail addresses. They had similar formats, with odd line spacings, but the second one sounded convincingly English–“Hello mate,” decent grammar, etc.

It makes me wonder why on earth these coves don’t find someone whose first language is English and get them to write a script in perfect English to use? Very shoddy ?

My advice would be to actually speak to potential sellers/buyers on the phone before committing to anything. Not foolproof, but you talk on a landline it is traceable and potentially safer than email. And, you can make your own judgements as to their legitimacy . Most people are honest after all.

As a buyer or seller, at the end of the day you need to trust the people you deal with. .

    If you can’t. Don’t.

Scammers are everywhere these days, on this site too, but don’t let that put you off dealing with the genuine types. Who are in the majority after all.

    Be careful is the watchword.

    John.

Ken, I suspect that the reason why they don’t get somone to write a script in reasonable English is because they simply lack awareness and think that they already write (and speak) standard English.
I agree with the suggestion on speaking to the potential seller by telephone. Also going to inspect the item is sensible but of course it may not always be possible.
I wish these scammers would divert their considerable energies and agumen to productive activities such as getting a job.
