I’ve inherited an AM Jubilee circa 1990. The front suspension is very soft and much softer than my APB. The AM has done a lot of miles and I wondered if this was a sign of a weak spring in need of replacement. I’ve adjusted to the highest recommended preload and I’m about 14st by the way. Any advice appreciated.

Fit a ‘race’ spring, which is a dual-rate spring. It is particularly useful for big blokes.

Thanks Dave, do I get that from Moulton Bicycles?

    Hi there,
    I am a new member.
If it helps and you have sample spring I can get one or thousand made. (only need one for aday to check the wire gauge, poundage, etc)
I can ride to approx six spring works from my house and know a couple of the people who own them. spring dia size from thou- 25mm.
( yes I know 25mm dia will take a bit of hammering to fit but will take some weight!)

i had the race spring fitted to my tsr 30,the standard spring i found to be to soft and the bike was moving to much going up hill, once the harder spring was fitted it made the bike a much better climbing bike, but was very hard until i re adjusted ,its now just right can easily ride 50 plus miles a day.

I collected my latest AM7 just today….It came with three rates of springs included…..never underestimate the range of those friction dampers tho’….a T- bar works best when adjusting…..

To add to what Ken said above, adjusting the damping by tightening the bolts on the leading links makes a real difference and may obviate the need for an expensive replacement spring.

It is possible (though not advisable!) to lock up the suspension completely. Tighten each of the bolts an equal amount (Ken’s right about the T bar too) until the ride reaches the required stiffness.

    Hope this helps Ed.

Just purchased a race spring from BoA, not fitted yet but will let you know…

That’s it sorted with the stiffer spring (and not expensive). Doubt I’ll do the same mileage as previous owner but good to get it back on the road.

I installed a racespring on my AM18 and it solved the bouncing problem. Tightening up the suspension nuts works but defeats the concept of the Moulton’s dual suspension.

The best improvement is usually the new moulton riders pedalling style?..Alex Moulton always recommended a “rotary” style and using the right cadence, this comes perfectly naturally to most. Did you manage to set up the correct ride height with the dampers both horizontal?…a bit of an art in itself?
