Are Moultons suitable for tall people?

    Hello, all.
I don’t know about Moultons (I’ve recently been given one) but I’m a seasoned cyclist. My query is, or rather, my worry is this: at 6′ 2”, my Moulton’s seat pin only has 6cm left in the seat tube. The consequence of this is that due to the slant of the seat tube, my saddle is a ‘long way back’. I’m starting to curse the suspension because I bounce in time with each thrust of the pedals. Does the rubber block by the rear fork soften with age? Can I damp the oscillation with a Moulton Component? (I’m light for my height at 66kg.) Thanks for any advice you can give me.

    Hi Clive
Presumably you’re riding a F frame Moulton. These were designed and built in the ‘sixties when the mean height of a British male was about 5 feet 8 inches so there could be issues with some taller riders depending on riding style etc.
I don’t know if the rubber softens with age but I would not be surprised if it did. I am sure you will have checked that it is not loose and the rear pivot is working properly. I suppose one possibility could be to extend your handlebars with an extended stem.
You will get more informed responses if you post on the Yahoo Moulton site.

I’m 6 foot and fine as long as you can get the bars far enough forwards. When I started riding the Mk3 I realised that it is indeed shorter that the other F frame models. I have fitted a 130mm extension and I’m happy with the position.

The Mk3 can probably be set at a less sloping angle by adding some spacers between the squashball and the frame. There is also both a nut and a locknut that must allow for some “pre-squash”, and I believe you can stiffen it up by simply fitting a Jubilee clip around the squashball.
