Does any one have any suggestions as to how to revive the white plastic chain guards on F frames ? I need to remove scratches that have become in-grained with dirt etc.
Any help with how to clean up 50 year old paintwork that has the usual rust spots would also be appreciated.

Hi Clive! The products I’ve used in the past with good results are Cif/Jif kitchen/bathroom abrasive cream cleaner (the white one) for the plastic chain guard Available from supermarkets. AND T-Cut or Colour Back car body paint cleaner, for bike frame paint, from motor factors (or even Halfords!). Regards, William in Norway.

Hi Clive, I’d go for Vanish Oxi Action myself. It’s not abrasive and has managed to get stains out of everything else I’ve ever tried it on although I’ve yet to try it on a F Frame chain guard!. They even do a special one for whites. it’ll cost you about £4 for a little tub. Let me know how you get on. Cheers, Mal

you probably won’t be able to remove the scratches in the plastic, just the ingrained dirt.as for the paint will probably have to be rubbed down to bare metal (locally) and primed to stop the rust reappearing, most car paint sellers will have a colour that’s near enough, i speak from many years experience with old cars!

The white cif worked well on the chain guard. Also cleaned old Middlemores saddle, Arrowsmith bag, & outer brake cables. £2.50 well spent !

PS Clive! I forgot to mention the Middlemore Saddles and the brake cable outer casings! On my Norwegian made F-frames these are all light colours, beige saddles and white cable casings and they look almost new after a good clean with the Cif (which is still called Jif here in Norway!). It also works a treat on white Union pedal rubbers that are fitted to many DBS bikes here (like those those on the Lauterwasser Stowaway and the original Marathon, and some other ‘special build’ F-frame bikes.

Scratches in the white plastic chain guards can be removed by rubbing down with sandpaper, start with say a 120 grit for deeper scratches progressively working down through finer grades say 240, 320, 500, 1000 and polish with 2000 then t cut or similar.
