    Hi All
I have a Mk3 which appears pretty original and low mileage judging by the dunlop tyres/tubes and good bearing surfaces. I can’t find a frame number anywhere though. I thought it would be at the top of the seat tube, or under the BB, but nothing. The seat tube hasn’t been cut, so I’m a bit puzzled. Is this usual?

Roy The frame number on the Raleigh built Moulton Mk3 is stamped on one of the rear dropouts by the axle…but sadly not much use to you!
As for the seat tube, the clamp is around the tube, but pretty sure it will be slotted, or how does it clamp?
    The Mk3 is a great bike, have fun…ken B

Hi Ken, thanks for the reply. I found it under some grime on bubbled paint on the dropout as you said. It looks like 0771510 if that means anything to anyone.

When I said the seat tube hadn’t been cut, I meant it hadn’t been shortened, and therefore cut the number off. It is indeed slotted and clamped as it should be.

I’m really looking forward to getting out on it, and I hope to get to some MBC events/runs this year.

    Until the next question…..
    Cheers!

You are welcome Roy, Sorry I misunderstood the cut seattube, but I have never heard of anyone shortening one before, as I hinted the numbers mean very little and the only chance of dating is the SA stamped number on the hub gear…put some modern tyres on and it is a very practical bike, I should know because I rode one daily years ago, check out one or two here…ken

I think the hub indicated 1970 but I’ll check. According to the “classic Moulton” book, the tyres and pedals I have were fitted to early Mk3s, but that’s about as far as I’ve got.

I hope to time trial with it on our club 10s this summer, just for a change. The top gear on the hub (about 85 I think) is about my usual gear for a flat TT, so that will be interesting……I’ve put some Schwalbe Kojaks on so I’ll be flying! (Well, as much as I ever fly!)

I’ll put some pics up when the project is finished.

True the standard wide hub gives an 85″ top gear, coupled with the short wheelbase a lean machine, with easily removeable rear rack…look forward to seeing it..ken.
