    Hi!
I am restoring a Moulton Speed and like to replace the front hub with something lightweight. Does the Brompton x-light front hub fit into the Moulton front fork? Are Brompton hubs compatible at all? Brompton hubs measure 76 mm, I measured my front fork arround 85 mm. Thanks for any suggestions.

i tried this over christmas as you say the brompton hub is smaller and i seem to recall it wasn’t long enough to pack out with washers, the ball bearings are different sizes as well, it may be possible to use the moulton axle and brompton cones with the brompton hub and pack with washers.i think you could also bend the forks in if you didn’t intend to use the original hub again

The Brompton hubs are 74mm. A MK1 or MK2 front fork should be around 95mm (3.75″ as I recall). MK3 front forks were about 88mm (as I recall actually 3.5″) as they used the standard Raleigh front hub. I’m wondering if you have a MK3 fork or if someone fitted a MK3 front hub at some time? I have narrowed a MK3 fork to74mm, but I would be reluctant to try that with a MK1/2 fork. Brompton front hubs use a 8mm axle which is almost exactly the same diameter as the MK3 hubs (5/16″) so they fit right in MK3 dropouts. I do not recall what the MK1/2 axles are, but I believe they are 5/16″ as well. However, it is not uncommon to find someone has filed the dropouts to fit modern axles which are slightly larger diameter (9mm) and typically 100mm OLN.

Hi. Don’t know if this will help, but I used a Brommie front wheel on my mk2 and simply replaced the slim cone lock nuts with standard wheel nuts. This seemed to take up most of the slack. I then used normal wheel nuts on the outside. They have worked ok for me and had no issues in 250 or so miles since fitting.
