Hello – and a question about what weight can be hung where

Hello, I’ve just got my first Moulton (a TSR2 belt drive), and haven’t stopped smiling yet. I’ve just joined the club and hope to get out on October’s North West ride. And already I’ve got a question or two I’d like to ask wiser and more experienced heads than mine.

The TSR2 will be used as my main commuter, as the old Brian Rourke bought to ride in L’Eroica Britannia, goes into hibernation. I thought I’d treat the new bike to a new lock and got an Abus Bordo Granit X-Plus 6500 (one of the foldable ones) – the thing is, it weighs a lot – 1.6kg and once mounted on the bike’s seat tube bottle bosses gets a bit in the way.

My question is, would it be OK to attach such a weight to the other bosses on the bottom of the frame, the diameter of the tube being much smaller?

    Thank you for your thoughts.

I don’t know the answer- but wonder how much heavier the lock is than a drinking bottle filled with water?

True, spookily a 700ml water bottle will weigh 700gm (plus the bottle weight), so I suppose for cash it’s two and a bit water bottles worth.

I see quite a few commuters carrying heavy locks around their shoulders these days.

I’ve persevered and got used to the Abus being mounted on the seat tube bosses.

The tubing of a TSR is pretty chunky; no 0.5mm wall thickness like the top end bikes. Given that and the brazed-in bidon mounts, I’d be happy to hang the lock from it. Your choice, of course.

Next timeI get thirsty and want a bottle I might give it a go.
