Hello, I’ve just registered on this site, and am learning how much work needs to be done to my Moulton. Are there practical workshops that people can go on that instruct on things like dismantling the bike, fitting a new rim to wheels, cleaning inside the steering column, etc? I’d really like to do it all myself if possible. Many thanks.

On the Title Bar of the Web page, place cursor on Resources; a drop menu links to most of the information you are likely to require.

Also on the Title Bar, Moulton Preservation, (founded in 1980), are a great source of parts and services, for F Frames.

SJS cycles sell 16″ 349 ETRO rims in 28 and 36 spoke drillings.

Be aware of Brompton front wheels, the hub and axle is too narrow for an F Frame.

Be aware modern 7 and 8 speed hubgears, they are too wide to fit Moulton rear forks unless modifications are undertaken.
Enjoy the restoration of your classic, with alloy components all round and good tyres your Moulton will have a good turn of speed and give many years of service

great to see someone keeping another on the road.
pandora has pretty much said it all, but youtube is a wonderful source of the more basic resto stuff ie paint an prep chrome work treatment etc

Many thanks Pandora and Geoffrey. I’ve learnt so much in just a few days. My local bike shop says they will build the wheels for me, and I’m in the process of sourcing the components. Every day I am tempted to give up, as there is a lot of work to do, but something keeps me persevering!

You can let the bike shop build the wheels, but why not try one for yourself?

Try a front wheel to begin with, the 16 inch rim is very stiff and rigid, and therefore easy to true,

My first ever wheel build being for for a an F Frame dates back to about 1990, it is still true and the spokes evenly tensioned.

google Sheldon Brown to find the #1 website for the bicycle DIY mechanic

Wow, that’s really encouraging Pandora. I’d thought about building the wheels myself, as I would really love to try, but didn’t know where to begin trying to find out how to do it. I thought it would need specialist tools and that I’d never be able to get the tension right. I’ll google Sheldon Brown like you say. It will save me £70 if I can do it myself!
