Does the MBC have any suggestions for suitable insurer (comp, 3rd party, etc), or perhaps an arrangement with one?

Any bike insurance will cost at least 10% of the value of the bike per annum. You’re better off putting that amount aside each year towards a replacement!

On the other hand you can add it to your household insurance under “all risks” so it’s covered outside the home. John Lewis and M&S house insurance cover bikes up to £4k or £5k without extra charge. I pay a moderate extra premium to cover my DP.

I’ve checked with my insurer and my bikes are covered under my normal household insurance.
The only stipulation is that they have to be locked to a “secure structure” when I park them.
However I did tell them that I mainly used them on day rides in the countryside and normally parked them at a pub or tea-room where I could see them.

I raised this question on the Yahoo forum about a year ago and, despite several suggestions, I came to the same conclusion as Keith Hales above. I think the best thing is either to keep the bike with you or under an extremely sturdy lock and always within range of sight!
