Hi, i’m Jason and have just joined the club having purchased my first Moulton.
I collect it tomorrow evening and i am very excited in having bought it (though i am yet to actually see it in the metal)
I came to buy it having picked up the owner last week (i am a taxi driver) mentioning my interest in old bikes the previous owner stated he has this which he had owned for 20 years and it had stood idle in his shed for 10. he asked if i was interested in saving it and at £30 how could i resist.
The below photos were sent from the current owner and yes it is a rebuild project which i am more than up for doing.

As can be seen it’s a MK3, it has been handpainted at some point but that’s no worry to me, it also sports a Sturmey Archer front dynamo, as for the rest i’m not sure until i get it home and inspect it properly.
The plan is a full rebuild, i really enjoy rebuilds and love seeing how components work and making them do so when they have failed.
I want to paint it in the metallic red that the MK3s came in, i’m not keen on the white even if it is what its original shade is.
below is a project i have just finished, the full rebuild of a MK2 1980 Raleigh Grifter that now hangs in my garage

Bought for £8 at last years Spring Autojumble at Beaulieu

Countless hours of parts chasing and work.

    Welcome Jason.

Very jealous I’d love a mk3. Hopefully it will be ready for the club meeting in Sept.

Nice project. You’ll soon discover why it has the extra caliper on the back when you get the Sturemy S3B ‘working’. The front hub is wrong, as you have worked out. You are missing the black with red stripe chianguard, the grips should be black and no doubt a few other details will need sorting. But looking at your Grifter you know what you need to do! Look forward to seeing how the project progresses.

Thanks for the replies, i have been all over it and there are are a few parts that are incorrect. Alloy levers, bars and headset. It has 1964 hubs. Different crankset so I am going to keep most of the stuff and mint the rest. It will be going to be the metallic red but keep the Mk3 look

might be worth looking at tony hadland’s blog pages about the raleigh 20, tell’s how he overhauled the bottom bracket? (raleigh thread and all that)

Th Mk 3 chainguard in black with red stripe, they pop up for sale quite regularly, in very good condition, sometimes as new, are they new-old-stock or do they also fit another Raleigh bike?

I’ve got a bunch of tatty but original Mk3 stuff including the black and red chain ring if Jason (or anyone else restoring one) is interested.
