I see a nice condition one of these has just gone for over 2K on Ebay.

Probably an international buyer I would guess ?

I have one myself that I paid just over 1K for a couple of years ago. Mine is converted to a 3 speed and 16″ wheels. Whilst it was not purchased as an investment its nice to know its a least holding its value. Not sure any of my other bikes would ever do that except maybe my Bromptons.

a year or so ago f-frames and space frame prices seemed to be converging ,now it seem’s space frame prices have gone exponential and as for f-frames you almost can’t give them away

My AM5 Sturmey Archer hub needs repair or replacing. Can you suggest who/how/where best to have this done?
Is it possible to fit 7 speed hub to an AM5?

    It is very quiet here?…..
I also emailed Moulton and have had no technical reply. Having bought 4 new Moultons over 30 years I am a bit disappointed with the lack of response.
Do AM5 owners have to throw the bike away when the hub fails?

Ben at Kinetics in Glasgow replaced my old 5 speed Sturmey Brompton with a 14 speed Rohloff hub. I think he can do the same for a Moulton AM. In fact I think it is easier (and cheaper) with a Moulton – the Brompton needed a specially built new rear triangle.

Rohloff’s are great – I have one on my touring bike so don’t need that on my utility bike as well. Also, I think they won’t fit the 17″ 28 hole rims of the AM. The 17″ diameter is also below their minimum limit.

    From the Rohloff manual:

“The Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 should not be laced into a wheel smaller than 18” in diameter, because, due to the hubs large flange diameter, the spokes would enter the rim at a too acute of an angle.”

But your Brompton has 16″ wheels which usually have only 28 spokes?

Bromton out this morning. Counted 32 holes in replacement rim for Rohloff hub.
Try BoA again. They’re sorting me out a rack for AM7.

My AM5 now has a new 17″ wheel with a Sturmey X-RF8 hub thanks to https://www.traditionalcycleshop.co.uk/
How do I like the upgrade? Well it is very early days, but the gears are good, the trigger change is slick and quick, although when changing down to the lowest gears my thumb movement is stretched to the limit. The wide 30% step to the lowest gear is OK for when I really need it. The 30% step to the highest gear is too big but at that speed I don’t really need to pedal at an optimum cadence. The six inner gears are closer than the SA5 and are the same spacing as a Rohloff. This just means I change more often but always have a good gear.
