Hello everybody. I was off to work the other morning when I saw a bike with small wheels left outside a house for the scrapman. At first all I wanted was the wheels for a trailer project. However, I saw the name Moulton and decided to restore the thing using as many original parts as possible. I am taking it apart and have removed my first cotter pins in 25 years with a vice and big extension bar! I am now stuck.
Can anyone tell me the size of the very difficult to reach nut that holds the black rubber bumper on to the rear triangle? it looks like it should be 11mm or the imperial version of 11mm but I can’t get a socket to fit. I want to de-rust and respray the back but will be keeping the lovely burnt orange sort of coloured paint on the rest of the bike.

    Help and thanks in advance.

I believe there is a smaller jamb nut and the main nut. There are no metric fasteners on your bike (at least there shouldn’t be). I think they are Whitworth size, but I was able to use a 9mm for the jamb nut and a 7/16″ for the main nut. By the way, don’t lose the nuts. They are 1/4-26, a very uncommon size.

You can buy new nuts from motorcycle dealers, it is an old Triumph size I believe. My bicycle dealer lost my nut and I bought 10 or 20 stainless steel nuts as replacement.

    Bye, Thorsten

Sorry for the huge delay in replying to those kind enough to answer my question. Thanks! I was too used to dealing with metric bikes! the MK III has been restored and is now in regular use on the Totnes bike path down in Devon. My Mum took an instant shine to it. Someone far more knowledgeable than me has pointed out several anomalies between other Mk IIIs and this bike:

Colour: Appears original and is a deep burnt orange with a black rear triangle.

Rear Hub: Sturmey 3 speed dated 11/1968 but no drum brake.

Rear Brake: Matches the front. Both are chrome callipers.

Pump Pegs: On the main down tube.

Kick Stand: The remains of this are on the rear triangle and not the BB.

There is a frame number which is 26969. I would love to post a picture but can’t find an attachment method?

Thanks in advance for any ideas!
