    Hello all,

I fitted one of these to my TSR 9, and like it alot! Does anyone know if it might be a problem generally though? Because rear triangles shouldn’t be loaded like that? I got a lot of squeaks out of the bike during a camping trip and it got me wondering..

    Thanks

The only issue that I can see is that by loading the rear triangle with the panniers, you have increased the un-sprung weight of the rear suspension. The effectiveness of suspension depends on the un-sprung weight of wheels, springs, supporting struts etc. being as light as possible in relation to the weight of the vehicle that carries them. By increasing the un-sprung weight, you reduce the effecticeness of the suspension.
If you could arrange the pannier rack so that it’s fixed to the cycle frame, leaving the rear suspension to do its job will give a smoother ride.
An analogy: Tie 2 house bricks around your waist and go for a run. It’ll be a bit more demanding than having no bricks. Now tie each brick to an ankle and then run. It’ll be a heck of a lot harder than having them around your waist. Same weight!

Thanks Aynsley very interesting! Should probably give in and get the rear rack, though I’ve liked having my panniers at the back like that.

The creaks that got me worried started after a day or two, only occured when I was pedalling and the chain was under tension, and the bike had “warmed up” a bit, but otherwise seemed unrelated to how hard I pedalled etc and more to do with movement of the suspension. Removed a joint and it’s a bit better but I’ve not tried with a heavy load yet.
