Do all of the accessory prop stands have the black rubber foot that hooks to the rear carrier or was there a different type of foot on some of them? Would there be interest in reproductions of these rubber feet?
April 25, 2012 at 5:51 pm #3263Thorsten and Pia KleinMemberHello Ian,
I am interested in a reproduction as our prop stand has not one.
Bye, Thorsten
April 25, 2012 at 11:11 pm #3264Ian SpencerMemberI’ll need to play around with this. Once i get my speedsix done I’ll look at making these.
July 19, 2012 at 11:55 am #3265Ian SpencerMemberI wanted to revisit this older post. I’ve just purchased the materials needed to start working on this little project and wanted to see if there was still interest in this. It’s still going to take me some time to get a mold made that I’ll be happy with… I’ve not done this type of work for many years, actually since I worked for a rapid prototype company while doing a college internship. So, I’ll need a little bit of time to practice and get it right before i can pop out a good final product. This is an excellent part for me to start out with due to it’s small size and simple design.
I will have some costs in mold making materials and the liquid rubber. I’m going to experiment with a very durable rubber product that is popular in custom prop making. It’s commonly being used for making rubber prop guns and is very durable and still flexible. This material is also very expensive and I will need to gauge some interest in order to buy the proper amount and determine how much I will need to charge for the final part. I would expect to offer these for roughly 15.00 to 20.00 USD per part (Maybe about 12.50 UK ea.).

Sounds like a fun project and a worthwhile one at that. It might be an idea to post on the Yahoo! forum too as it seems to have quite a bit more traffic.
I can post a link over there for you if you like?
Good luck!
MattJuly 19, 2012 at 7:45 pm #3267Ian SpencerMemberI even wondered if putting them on eBay might be a better approach. Set a static price with a buy it now option. If there is enough interest, I might even be able to get the price down on it.
First, I need to make sure I can pull a decent part. I’m going to try to get started making the mold this weekend.
July 20, 2012 at 8:23 am #3268Matthew DunnParticipantCool,
Fingers crossed it all works out for you Ian! Be interesting to see how you do it.
MattJuly 20, 2012 at 2:35 pm #3269Ian SpencerMemberI got started on this last night. I’m talking step by step pictures of the process to show how it’s done. I have one side of the mold finished now, and will start the 2nd half tonight. I’ll post pictures here this weekend. I’ll just offer the finished parts up on eBay once I can get some good pulls.
July 20, 2012 at 9:43 pm #3270Ian SpencerMemberHere’s where I’m at on the prop stand foot project:
Image #1 shows half of the original NOS rubber part being mocked up in clay. The silicone plastique will be used to create the first half of the mold.
Mold guides have been inserted, along with vents. I can now start applying the plastique.
The part is now completely encapsulated in the plastique, creating the first mold half. This now sits while the product cures.
Identification of the mold!
After the plastique cures, I can remove the clay base and repeat the process to create the second half. I’ll apply a layer of mold release to prevent the 2 halves from sticking together.
More to come…
August 9, 2012 at 1:14 am #3271Ian SpencerMemberUpdate on this project. I created a new mold out of a pourable silicone becasue the rubber part I used to make the first mold reacted with the plastique and never hardened properly. The new mold turned out great and is now producing nice repro parts.
August 10, 2012 at 8:21 am #3272Matthew DunnParticipantGreat job Ian! Hopefully you’ll have some to bring to BoA, I’m sure lots of people could use one of these.
MattAugust 10, 2012 at 8:15 pm #3273kenneth buttterfieldMemberThat is a great piece of work Ian….when can we expect to see project two….Balilla brake hoods?….ken
August 11, 2012 at 12:13 pm #3274Ian SpencerMemberThanks guys. I’ve sold 3 of these on eBay so far. I’ve been working on making up some more. The process is slow because I can only make one at a time. I’ve started making a second mold to allow me to speed up the process. I’ll be sure to bring some with me to BOA.
Yes, I’m already working on the Balilla hood project. I need to get a good model to work from. I have 2 pairs of NOS levers with hoods, but I dare not try to remove the hoods from these without risking damaging an original set. I have one pair of levers that is missing a hood, and the one that has the hood is pretty dried up and I think it cold be sacrificed for the project. I’ll need to make a cut on the hood to allow me to gently remove it from the lever assembly. I’ll then need to clear coat the part to seal it, then try to repair the damaged areas to make it smooth and clean looking. I know how I want to make the mold, but finding the right product to use to make the parts is where I’m stumped. The originals are a gum rubber… and I don’t know enough about these rubber products to know what I need to use to replicate it. I’m still doing research, but I think I’ve found a good source for products that has a technical help line that can help me. More to come on this once I get started.
I also saw someone ask about the white plastic chain guards… that might be a good one to try out also.
August 12, 2012 at 7:10 am #3275Matthew DunnParticipantYou’re a legend Ian! I thought Ken was joking, I didn’t expect you to be actually part way to making them!
Can you hurry up and bring a set to BoA please, I’ll be bringing my Speedsix : o )
MattAugust 12, 2012 at 1:16 pm #3276Ian SpencerMemberI seriously doubt I will be ready by BOA, but you never know. I’m still prepping the part so that it will make a good model. Just takes time. I’ll see if I can figure out what I product I will need to use for pulling the parts. I might get lucky and have a mold made by next weekend… but don’t count on it. Scout season is starting back up again and I am the scout master! Big time drain there!!! I can tell you this though… they will get done. 🙂
August 13, 2012 at 4:28 pm #3277Matthew DunnParticipantGood luck Ian, sounds like you’ve got quite a bit on your plate already, you must have an understanding wife : O )
Enjoy the scouting and see you next month,
MattSeptember 10, 2012 at 5:07 pm #3278Thorsten and Pia KleinMemberHello Ian,
I am still interested. Could you please post a link to the ebay auction?
Thanks in advance,
ThorstenSeptember 10, 2012 at 6:25 pm #3279IanParticipantI wish I’d known you had not got one yet as Ian was at Bradford on Avon this weekend and had some prop stand feet for sale. It would have been easy to get you one and send it off. I guess he won’t be back in the USA yet.
September 11, 2012 at 5:29 pm #3280Thorsten and Pia KleinMemberHello Ian (Kew),
my fault, I have not visited this groups the last few months.
As the Billiard cue Deluxe is a long time project it has time with the rubber foot.
What really annoys me is that I had forgotten to organize the buy of some patent stickers from Julian. Everything else worked. Our friend Marco got me the things I want and our friends Laurens and Petra will bring the bigger parts home with them later this week. Probably I could take over everything this Saturday as we will meet the others for an origami tour at Frankfurt/Main.September 12, 2012 at 9:11 pm #3281Ian SpencerMemberHi,
I just PM me and I will make arrangements to get you one.
Ian
