Reconnecting gear cable on seperable

I thought I’d better have a go at separating my TSR 30 as I’ve only just got it and not done this before.
So I watched a video on YouTube and thought “That seems simple enough”, so I unscrewed the gear cable and now it’s too tight to stretch back to reconnect.
Any idea what I’ve done wrong and more importantly how I fix it?

(Oh did I mention I’m mechanically inept?)

    Hi

Make sure you check your gear selection, where the cable will be too tight if at the top of the block- make sure the shifter is clicked right down the block, and turn the chainwheel too, in order to get as much slack as possible on the cable! Also check that all the cable ends / ferrules are inserted into their stops- sometimes they slip out and will make the cable too tight for reconnection.

    Hope this helps.

Cheers – it did help – now sorted, glad to have learnt it at home rather than out and about!
