I’m thinking of fitting Sturmey-Archer drum brakes on my Moulton APB. I’d appreciate feedback from anyone with experience of this, how effective they are, and especially any difficulties with fitting on the front suspension fork. Thanks in advance!

    Hi Brian

Sometime ago I fitted the wide range 8 speed hub with drum brake to the rear of my APB. I would not recommend it. The hub is very coarse running and I broke a couple within a few hundred km. The hub has been revised with a stronger first stage now. The brake was OK.
As far as fitting a drum (or disk) to the front wheel, you will need to figure out what to attach the reaction arm to. The stirrup is not strong enough. Maybe the main fork is – but it moves relatively to the hub.
    Good luck.
