I am new to the restoration game and have started with a ’64 deluxe. The rear forks have the tiniest of cracks but needs repairing. This repair will ruin the paint! Do I just get the forks repainted as close as possible or go for the whole frame and mudguards as well? Red billiard que paint job is rough at present but original?

Its always nice to stay original but the forks need repairing so your choices are limited, it also depends on your budget and what you will want to do to the bike regards to keeping originality or going the whole hog and getting it resprayed etc, clean up the paintwork and decide from there is it really worth keeping it or get it painted as much to the original as possible? Does the costs outweigh the value of the bikes worth? Do you intend to keep it or just do it up to sell on? Do you have any good pics to give us an idea on the condition to help with an answer? Also if your on facebook, try and get on the Moulton Bike facebook page, your answer will come a lot quicker than here and its easier to post pics etc.

    Hi Alan,

Welcome to the bottomless pit that is being a Moultoneer. Des makes good suggestions. I feel it easy to get the whole thing resprayed / powdercoated as I did with Molly. But I had a starting point that the original paint was rough as a badgers behind and a pretty horrid colour anyway. The red billiard cue paintscheme is a classic so it would be lovely to preserve it.

i think powder coating is not so easy to touch up scratches, try two pack epoxy just as tough but easier to touch up scratches

Les. Thank you for the information, I trust “Molly” is a Moulton not your wife! The bike will be used for dry days riding around Staffordshire. I prefer paint to powder coating as the finsh looks thick and gloopy.
