Hi all. I’m thinking of doing an 850/900 mile tour on my largely original, mid 80s (ish) AM7.

First of all, of course, I’d take it for a full health check at a Moulton dealers, (or at least an ex Moulton dealers, up in Berwick. Anyone know where I mean? They serviced it a couple of years ago and seemed pretty good.)

Assuming it passes that, the next thing I’d need to consider would be the luggage situation.

Can anyone tell me the weight limit for an AM? I weigh just over 10st so not too heavy myself.

I do have the front and rear racks and know that there were originally bespoke bags. However, I liked the load arrangement on the TSR I had. I’ve had a quick look and it seemed as if, with a bit of jiggery pokery, that a TSR front rack could be made to fit. I could then use 2 medium panniers on the front and the tent/ camping gear on the rear ladder rack. Has anyone ever tried that?

If it won’t, I’d be attempting to fit a tent, (under 2kg) + sleeping bag/carry mat on the front ladder rack and then finding some sort of grip in which to carry everything else on the rear.

I’d be interest in hearing what other members think on this subject.

    Cheers, LG.

    Hi Lawrence

I don’t know the all-up rider plus luggage weight limit of an AM, but the rear rack can carry a maximum of 30lbs and the front rack can carry up to 15lbs.

It is possible to fit a TSR front pannier rack with a bit of fiddling – I understand the factory used to sell an AM fitting kit for the rack so it may be worth contacting them to see if it’s still available. They also still make dedicated luggage for the AM front and rear racks if you’re feeling affluent.

This link may give you some more pointers.

    Cheers

    Hi
I’ve found that my lightweight tent, if rolled correctly will fit upright behind the seatppst, freeing up the racks. the old AM bag i have is just like a holdall. i do find the front rack a bit bouncy, best just for a small bag with just sleeping bag and thermarest and stove all of which are bulky but light. Overall, I find it handles much better loaded.

Hi guys and thanks for that. Peter, so you carried a tent and bag on the rear rack? Any pics of you loaded bike? Where have you toured on it?

    Cheers, LG.
