RE my plans to ride across Europe on my original AM7.

When I aquired my bike it came with a selection of new/old Wolbers, but before I ever came to use the bike I lucked into 3 new Bridgestones on Ebay which I’ve been using.

I’m now looking for some new tyres for my up coming ride and the choice appears to be between Duranos and Kojaks. I had 20″ Duranos on the TSR that got nicked and they seemed OK to me. Anyone any thoughts on the choice for 17″ whels?

    Cheers, LG.

Durano’s aren’t available in 17″ Lawrence. The only choices are the very hard to find Bridgestones or Kojaks.

Hi Gavin. That’s funny, I could have sworn I’d seen some 17″ Duranos, but now I can’t find them so must have been looking at 20″ ones.

Ah well, guess that solves that perticular dilem then. Kojaks it will have to be!

    Cheers, LG.

Hi. Seems they used to make 17″ Duranos as I’ve just had an email back from SJS Cycles saying that they would have been the better option but confirming that now only Kojaks are available.

Do they fit Kojaks to new AM series bikes?

    Cheers, LG.

SJS are talking out of their hats 🙂

Schwalbe have made 17″ (369) Stelvio’s and Kojak’s. When the Stelvio tyre range was discontinued a few years ago, it was replaced by the Durano but not in 17″ size so only the Kojak remained. There’s a list of all the tyres that have been made in 17″ on Tony Hadland’s site at https://hadland.wordpress.com/2012/06/23/tyres-designed-and-made-specifically-for-moulton-brand-bicycles/

I’ve used 16″ Stelvio’s on my F frame and 20″ Kojaks on my TSR, and I can’t say I noticed much difference between them in terms of durability. I’d have no concerns about touring on Kojak’s.

The Kojak is fitted to all current 17″ AM bikes.

    cheers

Cheers Gavin. If they are good enough for new AMs then I guess that they will be good enough for me.

That sounds like a great trip.

    Regards,

PS and I have just wasted an hour reading about Raleigh Randoneurs on google.

fraid the Only 17 inch tire is the kojak.its a trifle puncture prone so you are well advised to fit the kojak only in conjunction with Flataway Kevlar anti puncture tire liners..you could always ask at BOA if they have any Wolbers lying around which they want to sell..another possibility is the Solid Tannus tire.if you ask Tannus nicely they may produce a 17 inch version..

Old tyres get dried out and can be quite fragile. The hardened old rubber picks up less road debris, which is good for reducing punctures, but the sidewalls can fail. I had a 10-year old tyre blow out a sidewall when stopped a couple of years ago. No external damage, just age. Luckily I had a tyre boot and a spare tube.

Moulton now offer Bridgestone 17″ tyres, but whether they currently have any stock during the current supply chain problems is another matter.

A few years ago I bought some Bridgestone tyres while I was in Japan as spares for my Moulton Bridgestone.

whilst the 17 inch wheel format is actually the best rolling format of all wheel sizes it actually becomes impractical when there isnt a decent tire available..
currently the choice of tires in 17 inch is between the kojak and Bridgestone Moulton.
you would be advised to try to change your wheel size from 17 inch to 16 inch as at least you have a much wider tire selection..it has been known to be done and is documented in the Tony Hadland Moulton books..
