Hi, this my first post, I bought a TSR30(tour version) in february and used it daily, it has now done just over 2000 miles and the wear line on the Alex wheels has nearly dissapeared in places, is this normal for these rims? are there better rims i can buy when i replace them. can anybody recomend tyres i can use through the winter months will marathon pluses fit with mudguards. Sorry for the long post.
    Regards John.

I’d also like to hear about alternatives to rim brakes. I’ve a Brompton with less wear than 2000 miles and other 16 ” wheeled stuff. What are our options?

John, I don’t know if you can buy Alex rims to replace them (leastwise I have not seen them in the UK) but there are plenty of 406 alternatives out there. Tyres can be a problem with mudguards and caliper brakes on the TSR frame – I think you are limited to those nominally around 32-406 or narrower with mudguards.

I got round the problem with my TSR8 by fitting a Sturmey Archer X-FD drum brake Stan. There are others who have fitted disk hubs. Both require some thought if they are to work correctly on Moulton leading link forks but are straightforward on the F-frame.

Bikefix advertise 406 Alex DA16 rims – http://www.bikefix.co.uk/shop/index.php?unique=83caea18ee3956b6d9708f2f42842504&get_ol_id=6&get_gl_id=69&get_sgl_id=163&get_sl_id=598 – but only with 32 or 36 holes. It may be worth contacting them to see if they can also get 28 hole rims.

Rim wear can be slowed down by using quality brake pads, and keeping the pads clean and free from grit. I have over 5000km on my Alex DA16 rims with little wear. I use Koolstop salmon brake pads. Pedalkraft in Germany have Alex rims.

Thanks Patrick, I have purchaced some swiss brake blocks which claim they are kind to alloy rims i am sure these will be better than the original, but my next block will be the koolstop salmon blocks
    thanks, John.

A problem I have associated with rim wear is that the front brake judders when applied. There is a dark patch on one side of the rim where the chrome has gone. Anyone had this problem? I have tried polishing the patch but it doesn’t make any difference. It’s a 1965 model.
    Thanks.
    Nigel
